Creative & Sustainable

Casa Sereia is a home with soul. Every room has been shaped with artistic intention, restored original pieces, second-hand treasures and a few carefully chosen modern elements. Creativity, craftsmanship and the charm of a traditional Canarian fisherman’s house come together here, creating a space that feels authentic, personal and full of character.

Respecting the Island’s Heritage

Many attractive holiday regions tear down old houses and replace them with standardised new buildings. Although easier it makes villages lose their character – until every house looks the same and old neighbourhoods quietly disappear.

I chose a different path. Out of respect for the island, for the local culture, and for the neighbours who once built this house with their own hands, I decided not to replace it with something new. Instead, I renovated and preserved it – with the intention to keep its structure and its story.

When I first saw the house, I fell in love with two things: the rock in the bathroom, and the view from the front door – over the harbour, across the beach, into the cliffs and directly out to the sea.

Even the stairs leading up to our house tell a story. They were once narrow, small, and painted red; now they have been renewed by the city council. We had no influence on the redesign, but they turned out beautifully.

A Home That Grows With the Island

We surrounded the house with typical Canary Island plants: a large rosemary bush where everyone is welcome to take a sprig, fast-growing aloe vera (the very first little plant I found on the mountain above our home), a banana tree, papaya plants, bougainvillea and flowering ground-cover. Almost everything grows here with just a little water.

Traditional Design for a Naturally Pleasant Climate

Preserving the house in its original structure has also proven to be the right decision for daily life. Even during the summer heat, the house remains comfortable and cool. We do have an air-conditioning system for exceptionally hot periods, but we rarely need to use it, as the original architecture already responds intelligently to the local climate.

Upcycling as Artistic Philosophy

Giving objects a second life is an essential part of our approach. We restore solid, traditional Canarian furniture and integrate it into the fresh, modern design of the house. Through careful restoration, thoughtful colour choices and artistic transformation, everyday objects become unique pieces.

Upcycling, to me personally, means giving objects a second chance – honouring the materials, the workmanship and the story they already carry, and transforming them with creativity into something new, meaningful and beautiful.

Upcycling is both a creative process and an expression of respect for material, craftsmanship and resources.

Resource Conscious & Creative

We treat resources with respect. Towels and bed linens may not always be brand-new, but they are always 100% clean, fresh, and spotless. If guests prefer an extra change, they can simply ask. Conscious reuse of materials is one of our passions – an old sheet becomes a cleaning cloth and later a painter’s rag. We use what we have, out of care for the Earth.

Our home is powered by solar panels, allowing us to supply ourselves through natural renewable energy. We generate more electricity than we consume and feed the surplus back into the local community – a small, meaningful contribution to sustainability on the island.

Healthy & Sustainable Leisure

We encourage activities that are gentle on the island and uplifting for the body and mind: hiking in the surrounding mountains, practising yoga in the fresh sea air, cycling through the valley and along the coast, and environmentally responsible water sports. We gladly recommend local partners who share these values and promote healthy, nature-connected experiences.

Mermaids for Future & Ocean Protection

Casa Sereia is closely connected to the Mermaids for Future project. Mermaids for Future works directly with Sea Shepherd and Greenpeace, and donates 10% of its income to these ocean-protection organisations. This reflects our gratitude for the sea we live beside and love – its beauty lies directly before our eyes, and two of our rooms look straight out onto the ocean.

Casa Sereia is a place with character, creativity, and conscience – a home lovingly preserved, deeply rooted in the island’s history, and shaped with respect for the sea.
